Funny Massage Story

Because Justin is a wonderful husband, he got me a gift certificate for a massage for Mother's Day. I had specific instructions to use it during my maternity leave. Since my leave's end is quickly approaching, I decided to use it this morning. Here's the funny part.

As you know, when you get a massage you lay on your stomach. For those of you who are mothers who have nursed your children, you know that sometimes laying on your stomach can be a bit painful. In order to prevent this, I pumped right before I left. Then when I got there I told my MALE masseuse that I was a nursing mother and asked if he could get me a towel for the massage. He looked at me very strangely and eventually said okay.

My intended use for the towel was to roll it up and place it near my collar bone in order to take some pressure off my chest. Once he left, I realized that he probably thought that I wanted the towel because I was going to leak. No wonder he looked at me like I was crazy. Oh well!

This Just In: Lucy Revokes Parents-of-the-Year Nomination for her Parents

We're idiots. You'd think we never met Lucy before. Here's the story.

We all know that Lucy has a suspected cow's milk protein allergy/intolerance. I've been off dairy for all of July. We were planning to test her allergy/intolerance by bottle feeding her some of the milk I pumped in June when I was still "on" milk. We have been waiting for her to become more comfortable with bottles before administering the test. We wanted to test it this way, as opposed to just having me eat dairy, because dairy will pass through her system in a few hours and could take several days to pass through my system. Then....we went out to breakfast on Saturday....I got eggs Benedict and didn't even think about the ton of butter in the hollindaise. Oops. We didn't catch my error until I was half way through my breakfast.

It takes roughly 6 hours for my food to get into my breast milk. We ate breakfast at 11. She ate at 2 and was fine. She ate at 5 and wigged. Crap. She ate again at 6:30 and wigged. Crap Crap. We then wigged. We tried all of our tricks to calm her down and none of them worked. We rocked her, put her on her stomach, pumped her legs to get the gas out, walked her around. Nothing. She wailed for an hour. She was clearly uncomfortable. In our minds this confirmed the milk allergy/intolerance. After all, she wigged after two straight feedings. I started chugging water and pumping. Justin researched how long it would take for the butter to get out of my system. I felt horrible for causing her pain. I knew it would eventually have to be tested, but that would be intentional and controlled. This was a stupid accident. Then....

I noticed that her diaper was wet. Not just wet. It weighed 10 lbs.

If I haven't yet posted anything about Lucy's anger about a wet diaper, let me do so now. My lovely daughter will sit silently forever with poo in her diaper. But, god forbid you make her sit for more than 30 seconds with pee in her diaper. She will wig. We know this. We've talked about how silly this is. Why we just didn't check her diaper when she started wigging on Saturday night I will never know.

After I changed her diaper, she was a little upset for a little while longer, but then she calmed down and actually fell asleep. I then fed her through the night and she was fine. But, she wigged off and on all day today. Oh wait, let me add that we forgot to give her the acid reflux medicine this morning. Ugh.

So......was the wig out caused by a dirty diaper or a milk allergy? Was the wigging all day today the result of a missed dosage of acid reflux, or a continuation of the milk allergy.

WE DON'T KNOW BECAUSE WE'RE BAD PARENTS. And now we must subject our daughter to milk in order to test the allergy theory. Ugh. Understandable that Lucy revoked her nomination for us.

Milk-coma

After Lucy feeds, she goes into a milk-coma. I've been trying to get a picture of it, but it doesn't come across very well in pictures. She just looks like she's asleep. This is the closest representation I could get. It's the funniest thing. She literally looks drunk. It's awesome.

A typical night at the Burtnetts...

One Challenge Down!!

She did it. She took a bottle. More than once!! It's a miracle. It took 2 weeks and 3 different brands of bottle, but she did it. We're so proud. We have to give a big thanks to Nana (Justin's mom) for finding the brand that worked. She's almost ready for daycare now. We just need to tackle that "napping alone" thing. We've still got 2 1/2 weeks to go. Wish us luck.

Things I Love

I went back and read some of my most recent posts and realized that I tend to only talk about the challenges that Lucy/motherhood has presented. I've used the blog more as a "dear diary" cathartic outlet than a news feed for people. For that, I apologize. Let me make it abundantly clear, I LOVE being a mom and I LOVE Lucy with all my heart. The challenges just make it more interesting. There is nothing in this world that is better than a happy Lucy. I don't care who you are, she will melt your heart. I can't tear my eyes away from her. Even when she's being fussy, she's damn cute. You just know she's trying so hard to be good, she just can't calm herself down. I will truly truly miss being able to spend all day everyday with her once I go back to work. The thought of it makes me want to cry.
